The finish is decided long before the finish coat.
Almost every complaint a homeowner has about contractor work traces back to something skipped early. Paint that peels was applied over a surface that wasn't washed. Grout that cracks sits on a floor that wasn't flat. A trim gap you can see from the doorway was caulked in a hurry.
So most of the effort here goes into the unglamorous part — the prep, the layout, the sequencing — because that's the part that determines whether the job still looks right a year from now.
It also means the estimate reflects real work rather than a number designed to win a bid and get revised later. If something in the scope changes, you hear about it and price it before it happens.
